Virgins Mountains, Nevada

Craig is a writer who works on foot as much as possible. We knew we would get along well with Craig our first morning together, when he obliged us with a 6 A.M. swig from the tequila bottle he found amongst our boxes of cereal, spoon and bowl in hand. He walks and he writes and with him he always carries a photo book of his wife and two boys. In his words, he goes without being told to go. In the four days spent with Craig, we explored the nether-rocks of the Virgin Mountains, running, as he phrased it, like wild animals across the slick rock. In between bouts of writing exercises, we walked and, in shady rock caverns, stopped to hear Craig describe his feats of derring-do in some of the world’s toughest regions. With a focus on writing moments that drove to the heart, and over a dozen books in print, Craig brought the power of a good story to the group.
