The Westies met and camped with Dave Erley of the Grand Canyon Trust at the first annual Utah “Leave it to beavers” festival and again outside of Canyonlands National Park. While near Canyonlands, the Westies attended a talk Dave put together for the “Great Old Broads for Wilderness.” A self proclaimed “cow cop,” Dave speaks passionately in defense of public lands, pointing out the benefits and short comings of cattle in communal space. Meeting and chatting with Dave highlighted what Westies had learned over nine days of fieldwork with Grand Canyon Trust’s Mary O’Brien. Although Dave moonlights as the Mayor of Castle Valley, Utah, the Westies greatly appreciated Dave’s knowledge of the local area and his connection to the Utah conservation community.
