Will Dolan and Aspen’s Utilities Department

Will Dolan, Rob Covington, and Dan Bokenko
City of Aspen Utilities Department
Aspen, Colorado
September 7

Today the Westies met with officials from Aspen’s Utilities Department to learn about the city’s sustainability initiatives. Will Dolan, Rob Covington, and Dan Bokenko all shared with us their projects to ensure that Aspen has clean energy and clean water. They were later joined by Andy Rossello and Jeff Rice. One of their overarching goals is Aspen’s 2004 Canary Initiative, which establishes that the city will use 100% renewable energy by 2015. At this point the city is at 75% renewable and will reach 83% once the Castle Creek Energy Center, a hydroelectric project, goes into full operation. We started our tour of the Utilities Department at the Maroon Creek Hydroplant and Maroon Creek Diversion site. Here we learned that in addition to wanting 100% renewable energy, the department is committed to local energy. This meeting taught us what can be achieved on a city scale in terms of moving towards more environmental practices.
