On the rim of Joseph Canyon, the Westies met with Brian Kelly, Restoration Coordinator for the Hells Canyon Preservation Council. He discussed fire suppression, forest management, and non-native grasses—issues close to home in Wallowa County. The night before a day of hiking in Joseph Canyon, Brian and his dog Jango, spent the evening singing campfire songs at the Westie camp on Starvation Ridge. After a lifetime in the woods, Brian’s knowledge of Wallowa County, both ecological and political, inspired the Westies to further focus the blurred line between science and politics.
